conditions. we will get to it. we begin with a deadly storm as millions hit the roads and the mall. thousands without power in michigan upstate new york and new england. >> thousands of flights have been delayed or cancelled. our coverage begins with alex perez. the monster storm is packing a punch of snow, ice, strong winds and devastating floods. the water so high in central kentucky it washed away this suv drowning three people inside. in ohio, fast-rising waters forced the evacuation of this retirement home and the neighborhood around it. fire crews going door to door and making rescues by raft. creating a major headache and getting home isn't easy. 600 flights cancelled. 4500 delayed. on those icy roads, spinoffs and deadly pileups. at least three killed in oklahoma. one shopper in oklahoma city capturing this scary moment as

huge sheets of ice fly off a roof in to a busy outdoor mall. luckily, no one was injured n. in the south, the storm spawned possible tornados tearing apart this roof in louisiana, overturning mobile homes in mississippi and destroying entire neighborhoods in parts of arkansas. in milwaukee, john says walking his dog lola has become a challenge. >> it is shutdown mode. we better get inside and be prepir paired for whatever else comes. >> reporter: that's the attitude many are taking get out of the winter weather as soon as possible. temperatures are expected to plunge as the week begins. alex perez, abc news, milwaukee. after spring-like warmth here in the east, get ready for a wet, wild and chilly changes. >> and potential for an icy commute. let's check in with meteorologist jim dickey at accu-weather. good morning, jim.

>> good morning, john and diana. many spots over the weekend, new york city, philadelphia, d.c. setting new record highs. many spots in the 70s. that is changing here. arctic air in the northern plains upper midwest these are the highs through the morning hours. minus one minneapolis, minus 25 in bismarck. that cold air filtering in. running in to the warmth that's in place. or was in place. after the air masses collide we will see soaking rainfall along the 95 corridor including new york city, boston, philadelphia and d.c. rain stretches southward to the gulf of mexico. steady and heavy at times but by christmas we keep it cold. many spots quiet throughout the day. john and diana, back to you. here's a look at the weather. rain/snow and ice in the pacific northwest, dry in the southwest. snow showers in kansas and the great lakes. >> cool in the southwest with highs in the 60s. 40s and 50s in the south, and southern atlantic seaboard in the 70s and 80s and 60s in the

mid-atlantic states. suburban phoenix a little girl is safe after managing to escape a kidnapping. plifs say it happened in mesa. the 8-year-old was riding a bike around an apartment complex when she was taken. the suspect's car crashed a short time after the kidnapping. the victim was able to run in the arms of waiting police officers. >> i it's incredible. apparently the neighbors spotted this happening. they alerted a police officer who gave chase and it just all kind of happened at the right time, at the right place. the guy's car crashes. she's able to make her escape and there is a cop waiting to take her. >> the suspect 22-year-old man. police aren't sure if this was a random kidnapping. had he been watching her some time? it is part of the investigation. >> scary stuff. a very tragic story for new york, not far from our own studio. a father and his 3-year-old son diefd falling from a high-rise apartment building. the man was in a custody dispute

with his wiechl he was supposed to meet her at a neutral location to hand the boy over. instead one newspaper is reporting he threw the child off the building before jumping himself. four men under arrest for a fatal new jersey mall carjacking could face federal charges and the death penalty. the federal pen alties for a car jacking are stiffer than new jersey's and police say it is no random act. here's abc's rina ninan with more. >> reporter: police say these four men arrested for their role in the holiday shopping mall carjacking might be part of a new trend in crime. >> we believe the individuals immediately involved in this incident have been charged and taken in to custody. >> saturday, police revealed new details of the night friedland was murdered. they say the four suspects arrived in a chevy suburban suv. they discovered them leaving the mall and the car jackers struck. jamie watching as her husband

was fatally shot. two left in the suburban and the other sped off in the stolen range rover. >> the crime itself appears to 0 have been motivated for the desire for type of vehicle. >> investigators call it an epidemic of violent car jackings. with so many cases, it has been a focus for the fbi's new jersey office for three years. >> there's a black market for stolen vehicles. >> reporter: law enforcement sources say some stolen suvs are quickly moved to africa on container ships as part of an international ring. it's not clear if this was the case here but investigators are looking in to whether this incident is linked to others in the region. in a statement his widow expressed her thanks to police. we are grateful to the essex county police and all of the local authorities who are pursuing this so vigorously. rina ninan, abc news, new york. the newest model of nike air

guaranteed. d-con. get out. sea world is fighting accusations against the theme park in a documentary film called "black fish." it explores the death of a sea world trainer by a killer whale and explores the question if it is a good idea to keep them in captivity. here's aditi roy. >> reporter: sea world is lashing back against the documentary and the charges. it took out an ad to set the

record straight. the movie "black fish" chronicles the story of a sea world killer whale that's been associated with three deaths during 30 years in captivity including the death of dawn branshow in twen. this video taken at the theme park shows the 12,000 pound whale playing with her just before dragging her in to the water and killing her. the movie questions whether years of captivity triggers the whale to act aggressively. sea world said we do not capture killer whales in the wild and they said that he did not attack her. that he was indicate cans that tilikum became interested in the novelty of her poen pony tail and grabbed it and pulled her in to the water. >> i don't think this is the last we have seen of this. it gains more momentum, not less momentum. >> they responded to the documentary of whale hunt showing young whales separated

lines causing them to snap. crews are struggling to restore service to hundreds of thousands of customers without power. toronto's embattled mayor rob ford called the storm one of the worst in the city's history. >> reporter: the storm swept across southern ontario with an icy fury. firefighters in downtown toronto were left to deal with an ice-covered tree that fell on the hydro wires and caught on fire. while elsewhere, brilliant flashes lit up the sky as transformers began to explode it. >> is truly a catastrophic ice storm we have had here. probably one of the worst we ever had. >> reporter: hundreds of trees have across towns and cities caved under the pressure of the ice. most landed on hydro lines leaving hundreds of thousands without power. toronto's emergency services 311 and 911 had been inundate with calls. the mayor says a state of

emergency could be called in days to come can. it could be days before the lights are back on and the region recovers from this wicked ice storm. ctv news, toronto. >> mother nature had put parts of north america on a weather roller coaster with everything from snow, ice, spring-like temperatures and now an arctic blast. >> our coverage continues at accu-weather where meteorologist jim dickey has the latest. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. seeing soaking rainfall today. the air is moving out of the north and west. record warmth in place through the weekend as the air masses collide here. we are going to see more in the way of freezing rain across portion s of new england and that rain stretches further southward along eastern seaboard to the gulf of mexico. john and diana, back to you. >> all right. jim dickey at accu-weather, thank you. a pedestrian was rescued after hit bay commuter train in portland, oregon.

investigators say the man walked or ran in front of the train as it approached the station. rescue crews had to lift the train off the victim in order to save his life. right now it's not known how badly he's injured. scary moment for passengers aboard a jet leaving south africa and it hasn't even got off the ground jet. it happened as it was ready to take off from johannesburg. the plane's wing sliced through a building. 200 passengers were on board, along with the crew members. no one was hurt. twitter user apologizing for a offensive tweet about aids in south africa. she lost her job. many wonder how a public relations professional could have sent such a controversial message. gio benitez has more. >> reporter: she is the pr executive at the center of a firearm. justine sacco apologizing after this tweet went viral. going to africa, hope i don't get aids. just kidding. i'm white. she said words cannot express

bullet lodged in the bridge of her nose after her house was the target of a drive by shooting. the bullet broke the frame of her glasses this slowed the bullet enough to not penetrate her head enough to be fatal. >> the glasses saved me. i could have been dead. i just wish this never happened. >> six other people were in the house at the time of the shooting including three children. no one else was hit. it is believed to be gang related but bryant's family says they have nothing to do with gangs. >> here's one thing the police are saying. the bryants say they have nothing to do with gangs it's possible that someone who is affiliated with a gang may have visited them recently and therefore that somehow linked them to gang activity. >> just amazing, though. right? catching that little bit changed everything. >> that's incredible. family moved out of the house. they don't want to go back. i don't blame them.

successful christmas eve space walk would be the best gift of all for the six astronauts on board. >> hope everybody had a good day. >> reporter: a saturday space walk brought them half way to that goal. american astronauts. rick mastracchio and michael hopkins removed a broken 780-pound coolant pump whose failure jeopardized operations aboard the space station. >> don't let that go. that is a stocking stuffer. >> but a malfunction in mastroccio's space suit postponed the second space walk scheduled to complete the repairs. >> we want to dry that suit out overnight. >> water in the space suit was an issue. to be safe they would use a back up suit. >> it is their life support system. somebody on the ground, a team on the ground is making a plan to put it together. >> this is the suit they are wearing, behind glass in a display at the johnson space center. at 35 years old, it could be a museum piece but nasa always facing budget constraints must make old things work.

loved for another, deploying to afghanistan. >> we lived in a tiny mountain village. very rural and conservative. we lived in a mud hut. >> reporter: washburn and another female officer were part of a special operations mission, tasked with winning the support of local afghan women. one night they were given a rare opportunity to do just that by delivering a baby. >> it was very important to her husband that her integrity be maintained. part of that is she is not seen by anyone but her husband and family. we had the medics on the radio talking us through everything. >> washburn is reluctant to talk about combat but remembers two female officers who died performing the same role. >> those girls paid the ultimate sacrifice and every single one of us is so heart broken by their loss and so grateful these women -- and their sacrifice means to much to me and other women. >> weeks ago washburn returned
